Tom Sawyer directed by Puskás Zoltán, stage adaptation by Lénárd Róbert, Erős Ervin, Klemm Dávid. A relaxing, enjoyable show, well conceived and ingeniously articulated in terms of text and direction. The magic of Tom and Huck's adventures in Mark Twain's books is transposed onto the stage in an appropriate register, dedicated to "children of all ages."

Zoltán Puskás chose his cast very well, making equal use of the actors' physical and vocal qualities. I expected to find Róbert Laczkó Vass and Ferenc Sinkó in the cast, but I really didn't expect Csaba Marosán in the role of Tom Sawyer; a character he understood perfectly and for whom he created a distinct identity, with a sensitivity that is less visible in other productions. Tom Sawyer in this musical is deeper and more sensitive than I expected, while Ervin Szűcs plays a crazy Huckleberry Finn (excuse the expression, but it's to the liking of the little ones). I didn't expect him to play such a role either, even though I know he is capable of many crazy things on stage, but in the role of Huck he really "wasted" his professionalism. In fact, neither Csaba Marosán nor Ervin Szűcs took their characters into the realm of ridicule, they did not overemphasize certain traits, nor did they risk verging on caricature, which would have been a disaster for the spectacular production as a whole.

This is director Zoltán Puskás' fourth time working with the Cluj company and he is already at home here, he knows the actors so well that he puts some of them in new situations, in different roles from the characters they have previously portrayed. At the press conference preceding the premiere, we learned that Zoltán Puskás had originally thought of a different production, but following the premiere we can safely say that Tom Sawyer is a splendid choice, he has clearly thrown himself into the work with great enthusiasm and verve, and the result is a highly successful, atmospheric, free-flowing play that does not lack in serious moments. The choice of the title character is spot on, Csaba Marosán is a great Tom, both in character and voice, and he portrays the boy's ever good-hearted mischievousness well. Eszter Román as Becky perfectly captures the developmental arc of the two characters as they emerge from the cave as adults, instead of the carefree children they were before.
Márta Bodó: Tom Sawyer - a really good performance is when the audience cries and laughs with the characters, Liberty, 11 March 2025
Date of the opening: march 07, 2025
In the small town of St. Petersburg on the banks of the Mississippi River, Tom Sawyer, a rascal, lives a never-ending adventure: skipping school, mischief, and constantly annoying adults. How could you not like this young troublemaker? Who wouldn't have wanted to be a pirate, a treasure hunter or even a robber baron as a child?
But behind the story of childhood freedom lies a darker reality: the world of adults, where racism and social injustice are part of everyday life in the community. When and who teaches us to hate? Little Tom soon comes to understand that the world is not always as simple and fair as the games of childhood promise, but he also realizes that real courage sometimes requires standing up against the whole world on your own.
