Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street was presented for the first time in 1979 on Broadway, directed by Harold Prince. The performance won a Tony award for Best Musical the year it premiered. In 2007, Tim Burton created a film adaptation of the musical with Johnny Depp playing the starring role.
The play recounts how barber Benjamin Barker, returning from his exile in London, is confronted with his wife's death and discovers that his daughter is under the tutelage of his deadly enemy, Judge Turpin. Forming an alliance with his former landlady, Mrs. Lovett, he swears vengeance under the pseudonym Sweeney Todd. However, he has to pay a high price for the cruel murders.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber from Fleet Street is a musical with a strong narrative and great music that breaks through the boundaries of the traditionally entertaining genre. The music stresses the characters' passions but, at the same time, the pains of hell are demonstrated by the happenings on the stage, as if we were viewing everything through an aesthetic magnifying glass in a diffused light, similar to a fresco examined from a distance”, said Dragoș Galgoțiu about the performance.
