The Peachums, who manage a profitable enterprise where the income is produced by beggars, prepare for a celebration, as the upcoming coronation of the Queen holds out hopes of substantial income possibilities. Meanwhile, their daughter, Polly, secretly organizes her marriage to Macheath, the charming chief of the mafia. Brecht’s play is a completely modern adaptation of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera written in 1728. From the fierce recrimination, gloomy darkness, and radical tone of the original work, Brecht leads the spectator into the depths of Soho, a world of beggars, criminals, and prostitutes.
