Having more than 40 members in 19 countries in Europe and beyond, the Union des Théâtres de l’Europe (et de la Méditerranée) is an alliance of theatres and theatre artists that facilitates innovative transnational theatrical collaboration and international exchange. One of its key goals is to preserve and transmit European cultural heritage through providing a platform for international productions, and the exchange and the work of up-and-coming artists and their encounter with experienced artists on the one hand, and through projects that critically analyse political and social developments, on the other. Founded in 1990 by the French Minister of Culture Jack Lang and the director of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano Giorgio Strehler, the Union des Théâtres de l'Europe (et de la Méditerranée) views cultural and linguistic diversity as a strength and establishes sustainable forms of transnational collaboration in ground-breaking projects that all offer a critical reflection of today’s society.
