Gábor Tompa’s staging will be presented on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. as part of the 37th Piatra Neamț Theater Festival on the stage of the Youth Theater. Cluj audiences can view I Am the Wind on Sunday, May 10 and Thursday, June 11 in the theater’s Studio.
The production, based on the play by Nobel Prize-winning Jon Fosse, received several nominations from the Romanian Theater Union (UNITER) in 2026: Gyopár Bocskai for Best Set and Costume Design, Csaba Boros for Best Original Music, and Romeo Groza for Best Lighting Design.
Regarding the theme of the festival, which will take place May 10–17, Paul Chiribuță, curator and director of the Piatra Neamț Theater Festival, stated: “The theme of this year’s edition is: Theater—a Present Beyond. According to André Malraux, art and culture are humanity’s determined conquests; through them, humanity creates a world that is exclusively its own in the face of reality. To paraphrase the great writer, we might say: of all the forms capable of capturing the elusive dimensions of reality, theater has contributed most powerfully to making that certain ‘other world’ a present reality. The exploration of reality’s various layers, the conscious shaping of connections between things, and the endeavor to give meaning to existence—all of this is a gesture of community and belonging that, through artistic creation, establishes a connection with all of humanity.”
Following its premiere, the performance was presented at several prestigious festivals: the VII. MaFeszt in Satu Mare, the XVII. Desiré Central Station Festival in Subotica, the Romanian National Theaters Meeting in Chișinău, the Black Sea International Theater Festival in Bulgaria, and the 37th Kisvárda Festival, where the production won the award for best performance, while Loránd Farkas received the award for best male performance.
“Jon Fosse’s play *I Am the Wind* , directed by Gábor Tompa, became an island of remembrance. The actors of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, Loránd Farkas and Zsolt Gedő, guide the audience thoughtfully and sensitively through the silences, line by line. We hear a dialogue between body and soul, while in the meantime, we feel you can communicate on stage even without the use of words, and that death—a taboo subject in the Western world—can be handled with artistic subtlety. We find ourselves in a very intimate space: the corridor between life and death. The set design serves this purpose—a fusion of a sacred space and a hospital, where every tiny element symbolizes passing. The performance’s picturesque visuals, the play of light and shadow, and the shifts between silence and sound achieve the impossible: they render the unspeakable speakable within the viewer. Slowly, we find peace: there is a way out of the darkness, and we are given helpers (a six-member female chorus) for this journey. We all face the fact that life is finite. But redemption is possible.” – writes Imola Fehér in her review published in the Helikon magazine.
The two lead roles of the performance are portrayed by Zsolt Gedő and Loránd Farkas, while the members of the women's choir are: Andrea Kali, Emőke Kató, Gizella Kicsid, Júlia Laczó, Anikó Pethő, and Csilla Varga.
Contributors to the production include: set and costume designer Gyopár Bocskai, choreographer Enikő Györgyjakab, composer Csaba Boros, lighting designer Romeo Groza, and pianist Zsolt András. The production was created using Zsófia Domsa’s Hungarian translation.
The production was created with the permission of Colombine Teaterförlag, Stockholm, and the Mayer-Szilágyi Theater Agency, Budapest.
