This volume is unique in the field of theater studies: it is the first collection of studies focusing on the history of Transylvanian theater in Romania to be published in Romanian. Our authors have researched the overlapping patterns in Hungarian and Romanian theater, approaching the past decades through performances staged by Romanian companies with Hungarian directors or by Hungarian companies with Romanian directors. We considered it important that the performances be significant from a theatrical point of view: they should have won awards, be remembered by the community for outstanding acting performances, or perhaps have a particularly meaningful dramatic message. What is new, however, is that this volume reveals the secrets of Philther’s performance analysis protocol in Romanian for the first time, allowing the cultural context and historical influence of each performance to be traced through the analysis. Nineteen researchers worked on twenty-three performances presented between 1969 and 2009, bringing together such well-known names as Penciulescu and Taub, Frunză and Tompa, Purcărete and Bocsárdi, Cărbunariu and Ildikó Kovács in unexpected juxtapositions. We hope that this will make the canon of Transylvanian theater history that much more comprehensive.
