Tonight, May 8, the György Harag Company of the Satu Mare Northern Theatre will premiere Eugène Ionesco’s absurdist drama The Bald Soprano, directed by Gábor Tompa.
Eugène Ionesco’s body of work has played a defining role in Gábor Tompa’s career as a director: over the past three decades, he has staged the author’s plays in numerous countries and in several languages. His previous Ionesco productions include The Bald Soprano, Jack, or The Submission, Rhinoceros, The New Tenant, The Chairs, A Stroll in the Air, and Exit the King, which he has staged in Cluj-Napoca, Paris, Prague, Timișoara, Bucharest, Luxembourg, and Newcastle.
This production marks the director’s fourth encounter with The Bald Soprano. He has previously staged this classic of the absurdist theatre at the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, the Lucian Blaga National Theatre, as well as at the Athénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet in Paris.
