Janovics Featured at the National Theater Festival in Bucharest

The Hungarian Theatre of Cluj's production of Janovics, directed by Attila Vidnyánszky Jr., based on a text by Miklós Vecsei H. and Nikolett Németh, as well as the company's improvisations, will be featured within the 35th edition of the National Theater Festival (FNT) in Bucharest. The performance will be presented twice: on October 25, Saturday, at 8 p.m., and on October 26, Sunday, at 5 p.m., at the "Sala Pictură" hall of the I. L. Caragiale National Theater in Bucharest.

The 35th edition of the National Theater Festival will be held between October 17 and 26, with this year's motto being: FNT 2025. It's up to you! The performances included in the 2025 theater event were selected by theater critics Raluca Cîrciumaru, and Alina Epîngeac, as well as dramaturg and cultural journalist Ionuț Sociu, based on the viewing and analysis of more than 200 performances presented during the 2024/2025 theatrical season. This year's FNT program is not only a comprehensive cross-section of the previous season, but also the result of a conscious curatorial dialogue: decisions that summarize professional, aesthetic, and meta-theatrical considerations in an open work process, in line with the realities of contemporary theater.

Audiences in Cluj can enjoy the performance on October 23, prior to the festival, and then on November 9, in the Studio of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj.

The performance took part in the 2024/2025 season at the 12th Madách International Theater Encounter in Budapest, then at the Gyula Castle Theatre's All Arts Festival, but also at the National Theatre Encounter in Szolnok where the audience jury awarded it the Szigligeti Theater Prize of Szolnok, while Zsolt Gedő received the Básti Lajos Award for best actor under 35 from the Theater Workers' Union (SZÍDOSZ) for his multifaceted role portraya in the performance.

"The Janovics performance is the counterpart of Young Barbarians, also previously staged in Cluj-Napoca by the same creative team (written by Miklós Vecsei H., directed by Attila Vidnyánszky Jr., with set design by Csaba Csíki and costume design by Zsuzsanna Cs. Kiss) and inspired by the lives of Bartók and Kodály. It has the same fast-paced rhythm, the same acting space, both themes are closely related to Transylvania, and of course both are original performances that could only be staged here with this young, dynamic company. The performance magnifies two images: the aforementioned last Hamlet and a casting, featuring lots of burlesque humor, also referencing the atmosphere of silent films. In this scene, alongside Miklós Bács in the title role, every supporting actor has at least one scene that we can hold dear to our hearts.” – wrote Réka Hegyi about the performance in Játéktér.

The title role is played by Miklós Bács, with additional roles portrayed by József Bíró, Róbert Kardos M., Csilla Albert, Zsuzsa Tőtszegi, Balázs Bodolai, Éva Imre, Lóránd Váta, Lilla Pánczél, Hannah Daradics, Zsolt Gedő, Tamás Kiss, Gedeon András, and Loránd Farkas.

Creative team: Csaba Csíki (set designer), Zsuzsanna Cs. Kiss (costume designer), Dávid Mester (composer), István Berecz (choreographer), and Nikolett Németh (dramaturg).

The production was made possible with the support of the Bethlen Gábor Fund and the Hungarian Government.

Tickets for Janovics' guest performance in Bucharest are already sold out, but tickets for Cluj performances can be purchased at the theatre's box office (weekdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) and online at huntheater.biletmaster.ro.
