Julius Caesar Was a Great Success in Almagro

On July 28 and 29, the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj performed Julius Caesar - directed by Silviu Purcărete - at the 40th edition of the Almagro International Classical Theatre Festival. For the first time in the festival’s history, the Spanish audience was able to view a Hungarian language production, while at the same time, the ensemble of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj was the first one invited from Romania.

At the press conference held prior to the performance, festival director Natalia Menéndez stated that the greatness of the Cluj version of Julius Caesar lies in the fact that it is able to show that beauty lies not only in that what is good but can also be found in the bad as well.

The two performances played within the Renaissance style building of Antigua Universidad Renascentista, a former university built in the first half of the 16th century, were seen by a total of 790 viewers, who, uncharacteristically for a Spanish audience, have rewarded the actors with standing ovations lasting for several minutes.

The post-performance reviews also praised the Almagro guest performances of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj. Javier Vallejo, the reviewer of one of Spain's most popular and best-selling daily newspapers, El País, stated the following concerning the performance: the impact of the performance for the majority of the viewers resembled a trailer truck smashing into a jewelry store.
