A Streetcar Named Desire - The Last Premiere of the Season at the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj

The 2016/2017 season’s last premiere will take place on Wednesday, June 28, at 7 pm, in the Studio Hall of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj. American director Tom Dugdale has staged Tennessee Williams’ classic play The Streetcar Named Desire on the 70th anniversary of the American drama’s world premiere.
With regards to the drama, Tom Dugdale explained that he was especially interested in the point of encounter between mediums, and the permeability between these genres. After its world premiere, the drama, which is included on the list of compulsory school assignment in the United States of America, was adapted for cinema, resulting in the highly successful film directed by Elia Kazan, with Marlon Brando’s memorable portrayal of Stanley. Hence, Tom Dugdale’s production is a meeting between literature, theatre and film. According to the director, the central question of the play concerns the emergence of Blanche: will Stanley and Stella manage to live together with someone who comes from a different place and whose life is so unlike theirs?
The Streetcar Named Desire is an outrageous play, filled with outrageous dreams, dreamers, and violence – both physical and psychological. The play deals with one of the most sickening human impulses: the desire to destroy the outsider, the foreigner, the one whose lifestyle is different from your own. But it is not a cold play. Over its roughest parts is stretched a skin of love and sex that disarms the violence. The characters hope to find and answer to the question of how to travel through this world?
Set and costume designer Carmencita Brojboiu envisioned the performance’s space as an improvised and minimalist one-room apartment, which eventually will transform into Blache’s final trap.

Cast: Imola Kézdi, Anikó Pethő, Loránd Farkas, Attila Orbán, Csilla Varga, Ferenc Sinkó and Csaba Marosán. Set and costume design: Carmencita Brojboiu; dramaturgy: Kata Demeter.

The next performance will take place on Thursday, June 29, at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s ticket office weekdays between 10 am and 2 pm, and 90 minutes before performances, as well as online at www.biletmaster.ro.
