In this play for five actors, the successful doctor, Lane, (Magda Stief-Mugur) and her older sister, Virginia (Ibolya Csíky) lose control over their own lives. Charles', Lane's husband (Sándor Keresztes) skills as a doctor prove useless, and his late found love, Ana (Klára Sebők) loses her battle with illness. Matilde (Andrea Vindis), a housemaid of Brazilian origin, whispers in Ana's ears the perfect joke, and in this way she leads Ana into death through humour. There is love, laughter and death in Sarah Ruhl's play and there is accomplishment and renouncement, everything that fills a human life. The Clean House is rich not only in its psychological depth, but in the black humour and the absurdity which can be found there. Everything is subtly interfused by a kind of lyrically beautiful metaphysics.
