György Harag Centenary

Throughout its 233 years of existence, the Hungarian State Theater of Cluj has known several periods of crisis, being forced to change its headquarters several times, surviving moments that jeopardized its very existence. But never in the last 75 years has the theatre faced the danger of suspending artistic activity in the middle of a season.
After in 2024 the Romanian Ministry of Culture cut 51% of the year's budget allocated for goods and services, this year these expenses have been reduced by another 32%.
In 2025 we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great director György Harag, who passed away 40 years ago. Considered the most important figure of Hungarian-language theater in Romania and one of the greatest directors in the entire post-war history of Romanian theater, his name is among the top directors in Romania: like Liviu Ciulei, Lucian Pintilie, Radu Penciulescu, Vlad Mugur or Andrei Șerban.
In order to commemorate him, we have invited several theater companies where Harag was employed, as well as others where he directed memorable performances as a guest. The Hungarian Theatre in Cluj is the most awarded theater in Romania and the only theater in the country that is a member of the Union of European Theatres. However, we are currently unable to honor this Centenary of the utmost importance for our theater, and even more, we are faced with the impossibility of continuing the artistic activity and projects proposed for the second half of the year.
We hereby appeal to all those who love our theater and would like to celebrate this exceptional event with us, to contribute, within their means, to the “György Harag” Centenary events through the Corvineum Foundation, established to support the theater's artistic projects.
