The official opening of the 9th edition of the Interferences International Theatre Festival, organised by the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, will take place on Sunday 3 November at 7 pm in the theatre's Main Hall.
Gábor Tompa, the festival's director, said at the press conference preceding the festival that the theme of this year's ninth edition of the Interferences International Theatre Festival is 35 years since the regime change, to which he added: "The 35 years since the regime change are almost one and a half times as long as we lived under the Ceaușescu dictatorship. What happened to the freedom that suddenly came our way? Or have we only briefly lived the illusion of it? Have we fully or even partially reviewed the events of the past in order to start afresh and look to the future with a clear conscience? Revolution or coup d'état? A liberated civil democracy or a colonised Eastern Europe? Since then, two generations of those born after the change have grown up without satisfactory answers to these questions."
He also added that the difficult financial situation had for a long time made it questionable whether the festival would take place this year. However, despite the tighter budget, the theatre decided to continue, resulting in a predominance of domestic productions in this year's programme.
During the fifteen days of the event, Cluj audiences will be able to see performances by such national and international companies as ARCUB (Romania), I. L. Caragiale National Theatre (Romania), SFUMATO Theatre Laboratory (Bulgaria), Hungarian Theatre of Cluj (Romania), Yugoslav Drama Theatre (Serbia), Lucian Blaga National Theatre of Cluj (Romania), Miskolc National Theatre (Hungary), German State Theatre of Timișoara (Romania), Székesfehérvár Ballet Theatre (Hungary), Satu Mare Northern Theatre - Harag György Company (Romania), Tompa Miklós Company & Yorick Studio of the National Theatre of Târgu Mures (Romania), Theatre and Music Production Centre - Varna, Stoyan Bachvarov State Theatre (Bulgaria), Vígszínház (Hungary) Atelier 3+1 (France), Slovenian National Theatre, Nova Gorica (Slovenia).
