Starting from January, Eugène Ionesco's absurdist drama Macbett, directed by Silviu Purcărete and debuted in the 2021/2022 season, will return to the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj. Macbett will be performed for the first time this year on Wednesday, January 17, at 7 pm in the theatre's main hall. Further performances will be available on January 31, February 23 and March 10, all at 7 pm.
“Ionesco's Macbett is not a simple parodic, inside out reversal of Shakespeare's masterpiece, but an x-ray as well as a revelation of the type of brutalized public life that has become close to being absurd. The play presents, through relentless murder, public life that is animated and pushed into the realm of chaos by constantly stimulated hostility. At the same time, Ionesco's Macbett talks about the absurdity of conspiracies. He addresses today's spectator with surprising acuity.” – stated András Visky, the production’s dramaturge about the play.
The production of Macbett, directed by Silviu Purcărete, has also been featured at four festivals thus far: in 2022 at the 32nd National Theatre Festival in Bucharest, the 13th International Shakespeare Theatre Festival in Craiova and the 8th Interferences International Theatre Festival, while in 2023 it was performed at the 10th Theatre Olympics, at the Vígszínház in Budapest and the National Theatre of Miskolc. The show was also nominated for the Best Performance Award by the jury of the 2021 UNITER Awards.
“A masterful performance, which denotes Silviu Purcărete's pleasure to work on stage! Fascinating are his involvement and passion for the construction of each role. It's beyond my comprehension where Purcărete finds such reserves of perfection! A total spectacle, in which the eye delights in looking at the set and admiring the costumes; I can imagine Helmut Stürmer, Lia Manțoc, Vasile Șirli and András Visky putting together ideas and continuously feeding on Silviu Purcărete's ideas! Paradoxically, he, in turn, feeds on the best of each of these has to offer.” – writes Nora Rapotan about the production.
The performance was directed by Silviu Purcărete, the production’s creative team including set designer Helmut Stürmer, costume designer Lia Manțoc, composer Vasile Șirli, playwright András Visky, assistant to the playwright Kata Demeter, accompanist Péter Kolcsár, and assistant to the costume designer Bogdan Dobre.
The title role is portrayed by Zsolt Bogdán, while the cast of the production is made up of: Gábor Viola, Miklós Bács, Andrea Vindis, Áron Dimény, Lóránd Váta, József Bíró, Melinda Kántor, Anikó Pethő, Eszter Román, Szabolcs Balla, Balázs Bodolai, András Buzási, Zsolt Gedő, Tamás Kiss, and Csaba Marosán.
