THE END OF THE 2017/2018 THEATRICAL SEASON

An end-of-season meeting was held on Friday, July 6, at the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj. In the 2017/2018 season, the company presented a total of four premieres, i.e. only half of the eight previously planned productions. The studio performances of Angels in America I-II, Short Story of a Double Bass and Illegitimate, as well as the Main Hall performance of The Bourgeois Gentleman were presented during this season.

Nevertheless, our public has grown as compared to the previous season: the total number of 148 performances presented at the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj’s own venue, and the additional guest performances had been viewed by 23,796 audience members, while our company’s productions presented within theatre festivals and guest performances were viewed by an additional 5502 people.

During the 2017/2018 season, the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj took part in several theatre festivals, presenting Julius Caesar, for instance, at the Almagro International Classical Theatre Festival, and at Seoul Theatre Festival in August and September, respectively. The devised theatre project entitled Homemade also participated in several festivals, such as: the dráMA Contemporary Theatrical Encounter at Odorheiu Secuiesc, the Fest(in) pe Bulevard festival in Bucharest, and the Colloquium of Minorities' Theatres in Gheorgheni. Rosmersholm and The Lower Depths were also presented within the National Theatre Festival in Bucharest. These were followed by a guest performance of The Streetcar Named Desire in Arad, and The Blind presented within the DESZKA Festival in Debrecen. Additional guest performances of Rosmersholm and Who Shuts the Night were presented at the Comedy Theatre of Budapest (Vígszínház). Moreover, Rosmersholm had been invited to another two festivals this season: the Reflex International Theatre Festival in Sfântu Gheorghe, and the National Theatre Reunion of Pécs, where the production had been awarded the prizes for Best Performance, Best Actress, and Best Set Design. The Romanian Association of Theatre Artists (UNITER) had nominated the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj’s two-evening production of Angels in America in four separate categories (Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress), with Zsolt Bogdán winning the award for Best Supporting Actor.

Gábor Tompa, the Artistic and Managing Director of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, has been elected as the president of the Union des Théâtres de l’Europe (UTE) at the General Assembly of the international organization, held in May. Among the past presidents of the theatrical organization was Gábor Zsámbéki, who led the UTE after Strehler's death until 2004, as well as Alexandru Darie, the director of the Bulandra Theater in Bucharest, and Israeli director Ilan Ronen, former manager of the Habimah Theatre.

The Hungarian Theatre of Cluj’s 2018/2019 season will begin with its participation within the Hungarian Days of Cluj, when in addition to the performances presented, the company awaits its audiences to take part in the programs taking place in the now traditional Theatre Tent. Preparations for the first premiere of the next season are already in progress, with Gábor Tompa staging Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. The scheduled date of the premiere is the end of September, 2018. The next season will also host the 6th edition of Interferences International Theatre Festival, which will take place between November 22 and 30.
