THE HUNGARIAN THEATRE OF CLUJ WILL PRESENT TWO GUEST PERFORMANCES AT THE COMEDY THEATRE OF BUDAPEST (VÍGSZÍNHÁZ)

The Hungarian Theatre of Cluj will perform two plays in May at the Comedy Theatre of Budapest (Vígszínház). As part of the traditional annual exchange of performances between the two Hungarian language theatre companies, the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj’s production of Who Shuts the Night will take place on Monday, May 21, at 7 pm at the Pesti Színház, while Rosmersholm will follow on Tuesday, May 22, at 6 pm, at the Comedy Theatre of Budapest (Vígszínház).
Directed by Nona Ciobanu, the production of Who Shuts the Night is the story of the encounter between a prisoner and her former torturer. Max and Hanna, the main characters of the performance, are prisoners of their own dark fate and history. They need to make the past present again and again in order to cleanse, understand and punish the other – and themselves. The production is played by Enikő Györgyjakab and Gábor Viola.
Premiered in March 2017, the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj’s staging of Rosmersholm was directed by Andriy Zholdak. The play has already been performed within several festivals (Bucharest National Theater Festival, Reflex Festival in Sfântu Gheorghe) and it will be featured also in June in the competition section of the National Theatre Reunion of Pécs. Éva Imre, Balázs Bodolai, Tímea Jerovszky, Gizella Kicsid and Gábor Viola make up the cast of the production.
Alex Mircioi writes the following about the play: "Rosmersholm carefully controls the viewer – at times you understand and remain aware, while at other times you lose yourself in the performance offered. Zholdak employs two different degrees the involvement of the audience: at times he lets you consume certain moments and dissect their symbolism in your mind, while at other times he makes you abandon the rational realm by giving you emotional impulses".
