The letter of the UTE about the financial situation of the theatre

In a letter addressed to the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Identity, the board of the Union des Théâtres de l’Europe (UTE) expresses its concern regarding the budgetary difficulties of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, and the subsequent serious negative impact the situation has on its artistic programs. UTE is an organization that encompasses the most important Europian theatres and theatre artists. The Hungarian Theatre of Cluj has been a member of the UTE since 2008.

As a result of wage increases in the public sector, presently only 28% of the theater's annual budget can be allocated towards its operations and productions, i.e. the payment of utility bills, services, for maintaining the current performances on the repertoire and for the new productions. Compared to the eight to ten premieres of previous seasons, in the 2017/2018 season only three productions will in fact have their premiere out of the seven that were announced at the beginning of the current season. In addition, the budgetary constraints create great uncertainty also with regards to the organization of one the most important international festivals in Romania, namely the 6th edition of the Interferences International Theatre Festival.

We hereby release the letter of Mr. Michal Dočekal, the President of the Union des Théâtres de l’Europe (UTE), sent to the subsidizer of the theatre, namely the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Identity.
