Essayist, editor, literary translator and university professor Andor Horváth has passed away at 74.

He received his secondary education at the Brassai Sámuel High School, earning his French-Hungarian teacher's degree at Babeş-Bolyai University. He taught in Turda for four years, and from 1970 he started working at the A Hét publication in Bucharest; initially he was the editor of the world literature section, and later, between 1975-1983 he was the deputy editor-in-chief for the same weekly magazine. From January 1990 to September 1992 he was Deputy Minister of Culture of Romania, later becoming the State Secretary of the same institution. In 1995, he was elected President of the Bolyai Society, based in Cluj-Napoca, being later re-elected for the same position for another mandate between 1997 and 1999. Since 1996 he has been assistant editor-in-chief of the Korunk magazine in Cluj. Between 1999 and 2004 he was a member of Senate of Babeş-Bolyai University. Andor Horváth authored and co-authored several volumes of essays and studies on topics concerning world literature, as well as textbooks, having also translated works by Montesquieu and Camus, among others.

For the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj Andor Horváth translated the following works into Hungarian: Albert Camus: The Misunderstanding, Nathalie Sarraute: Pour un oui ou pour un non, Nona Ciobanu: The One Who Shuts Night, Georges Feydeau - M. Desvallières: The Lovers of Loches,  and Adrian Sitaru - Alina Grigore: Illegitimate.

A remarkable figure of Hungarian literature and culture within Romania, Andor Horváth was a great thinker whose judgments were reliable as he approached our situation always in the context of world literature and culture. His presence as an outstanding intellectual and astute conversationalist will be missed. His high moral character and intellectual elegance remain exemplary for those left behind.
