GUEST PERFORMANCES OF THE HUNGARIAN THEATRE OF CLUJ AT THE NATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL

The Hungarian Theatre of Cluj will present two guest performances within the 27th edition of the National Theatre Festival in Bucharest. Rosmersholm, directed by Andriy Zholdak, will be played in the Studio Hall of the I. L. Caragiale National Theatre in Bucharest on Monday, October 23, at 8 pm. On Tuesday, October 24 and Wednesday, October 25 at 6 pm, audiences are invited to the performances of The Lower Depths (director: Yuri Kordonsky), played in the studio space built upon the stage of the National Theatre’s Main Hall.

Yuri Kordonsky received the Best Director Award for his staging of The Lower Depths by the Romanian Association of Theatre Artists (UNITER). „There, in the lower depths, time passes differently than it does on the surface, it passes slowly at times, lazily at other times, or even sluggishly, then, suddenly, it becomes hyper-focused, rebellious, and uncontrollable by anyone, its rhythm becoming downright devastating. In the end, The Lower Depths is a performance where we witness individual and ensemble victories concerning acting, and in which the wonderful ensemble of the Hungarian Theater of Cluj shines in its full glory.” – wrote Mircea Morariu about The Lower Depths.

Andriy Zholdak reinterprets Ibsen’s Rosmersholm, shifting focus from the clashes of worldviews to boundless passion. Adrian Ţion writes the following concerning the peculiar acoustic world of the production: “Zholdak listens to the "voice" of this old theatre hall and builds an adequate space for these brutal confrontations. On the one hand, great salons with doors and a window of huge dimensions, on the other hand, the family chapel as a space of meditation, emptied of Christian symbols, after the priest confesses that he no longer believes in God. Undoubtedly, a spiritual void is created, one that is impossible to overcome.”
