“Why devils? Because their deeds are confusing and destructive? Or are they devils because they rebel and fall? The Devils is simply a comparison. It is a comparison that we have to make for ourselves in order to reveal the truth; everybody’s own, personal truth. As we destroy our moral barriers, committing our vile deeds and crimes consciously, we situate ourselves above everything in a godless world. Dostoevsky presents the failure of this nihilistic experiment through an anarchist group of intellectuals from a small Russian town. The crimes committed collectively only increase the weight of individual guilt. The main question of The Devils would be the following: If ‘there is no God, is everything permitted?’ It would be surprising to discover, as the answer to this question, that it is our inner evil that keeps the sacred in us alive.”
